The Four Main Steps You Need to Know About:

Note that all steps must be completed before the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund deadlines specified in Step 4, below.

1. MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS

Receiving a positive diagnosis of a type of cancer or other condition that is on the VCF’s list of qualified illnesses. A medical diagnosis is a prerequisite for getting that diagnosis certified. DEADLINE: None

2. DIAGNOSIS CERTIFIED

Getting that diagnosis certified in writing by the WTC Health Program (or other qualified government entity) as being directly related to 9/11 events. This certification is a pre-requisite for registering your claim. DEADLINE: None

3. REGISTERING YOUR CLAIM

Registering and creating an account with the VCF is a pre-requisite that allows you to officially file a claim for compensation later (but by the deadline below). DEADLINE: two years after your diagnosis is certified (not the date of the original diagnosis).

4. FILING YOUR CLAIM

Making an official claim for financial recovery by completing all parts of the claim form and submitting all required documentation. The claim may request compensation for treatment received either before or after the date that the claim is submitted. DEADLINE: December 18, 2090*.

*On July 23, 2019, the U.S. Senate passed a bill to continue victim compensation payouts through to 2090. The U.S. House of Representatives had already backed the bill and President Donald Trump is expected to sign the bill into law.
